Arnulfo Cantarero Author of Emotions

Author Monday!

Author Monday is a new weekly post on my blog in which I interview a author! I ask them questions about their book/books and also some fun questions like, what they would dress up as for Halloween! It's a fun way to get to know the authors and their books! Arnulfo will be my first author and I hope many others will join! Thank you Arnie for answering my crazy questions, you're the real MVP! Enjoy.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

A: Now that’s a tough one. I’m a big time nerd (or as a ‘friend’ once said, you’re just weird) although I enjoy working out (and not for my health either). I’m at home both eating pupusas or sushi, or a giant cheeseburger with curly fries. I ended up marrying my childhood sweetheart (we met when I was six, and she was three, and she can kick my butt) and I value friendship more than I value platinum (never cared for gold).

In your own words, please describe the book.

A:  a coming of age story of an emotionless alien, born to human parents, with a thinking sentient computer implanted in his brain as the only tie to his home world. This is his story as he deals with an emotional world he barely understands and how it is his mission to bring emotions back to a world that lost them more than two hundred thousand years ago. Wow, that was an awesome question! I’m gonna use when people ask me that from now on J

If you could be a character in any novel you’ve ever read, who would you be and why?

A: Duncan Idaho from the Dune Series J

Is there any author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

A; excellent question. There was a book I picked up at a used bookstore that just grabbed my attention from the get go. At the time, I enjoyed reading mostly Star Trek or hard science fiction, but this was different. It’s called Love Child by Andrew Neiderman. His style of writing was so different from anything I had read before. A teenage protagonist? It blew my mind, and I realized that an entire universe lay before me and it didn’t involve James T Kirk or Mr. Spock(Did I mention this was a while ago). It took me along the route of YA/NA style of writing, rather than say  more adult type books.

If you were at a Halloween party, what would your costume be and why?

A: I always joke I’ll show up as George of the Jungle, complete with a butt flap, but I have to get to 6% body fat for that (getting there). The reason why? So I can say the words “buff flap” in polite company

When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?

A: Both in college. I think I was a sophomore and I had read an article about this woman that started writing when her husband died back in the beginning of the 20th century and her books took off almost by magic. I had just picked up love child, and I knew how my book would take shape.

How did you come up with this title?

A: as I started writing my first book, I realized I needed a title. I had already come up with most of the characters and the central theme. I thought to myself, “What is the most important thing for Jason?” that’s when the eureka moment came in “Emotions!” I called out and the title was born!

How long does it take you to finish a novel?
A; if I had all the time I needed, six months counting editing. Although final editing will always be done by a professional editor (from now on)

You have multiple personalities, describe some of them.

A: Wacky one, always overly happy and making funny noises
Gentleman: bowing in front of ladies and calling everybody sir and being snooty and people
The fanboy; overly excited about anything literary or science fiction based

The glutton; give me CARBS!!!

Do you ever experience writer's block?

A: I can’t say that I do. If I ever feel a little block, I can immerse myself into that world that I’m creating and see how the story could play out, what the characters would say. Or I can turn on the TV and let that guide me. An entire chapter in Emotions came out watching a special about Mumbai.

So far, what has been the greatest moment in your writing career?

A: There have been a few, not going to lie, I lose it every time I get a good review, but I remember when I was featured in a magazine article in Exito Latino. It was at the very beginning of getting published, but it felt so good that I knew then I was on the right path with my life.

If you were to create a slogan for your life, what would it be?

A: Nerds do it better

What are you working on at the minute?

A: The sequel to emotions, called sins of the fathers (when you read it, you’ll know why the title) still in the editing phase, not even ready for alpha reading (well maybe alpha but not beta)

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

A: don’t ever quit. Like any dream that’s worth it, it’s a long, difficult road, but when you get there, the air is sweet, the colors vibrant, and you are the king of that hill.

What holiday would you invent to get the day off from work?
A: Nerd day. After all, the modern world owes its existence to nerds. You don’t have to be a nerd to enjoy it, but it helps.

Emotions

Jason Ariaz is not your average 22 year old. He has been genetically and cybernatically enhanced but that’s only the beginning. He is an emotionless extraterrestrial born to human parents and living amongst us. Both him and his implanted thinking computer were damaged on landing and must go through life as less than what they really are. The purpose of their mission: to gain permanent emotions from the more primitive society that is Earth. If he is successful, he will be the first of his species to do so in nearly 200,000 years.

Hope lies in the fact that he is capable of emotional episodes and he has been able to forge true friendships. However, he does have the chance of completing his mission if he can truly care for Ariel, the closest human in his life. But he better know his heart soon. Their lives are in danger of ending tonight, unless he can recover what his species has lost.

Author Kerr-Ann Dempster

Author Spotlight!

The Reluctant SacrificeBeneath Scarlett Valley (Scarlett Valley #1)

In my very first author spotlight, I have the Awesome Kerr-Ann Dempster author of Beneath Scarlett Valley and hers most recent novel The Reluctant Sacrifice. Kerr-Ann was very kind and let me interview her so my followers and fellow book worms could get to know her a little better. Thank you so much Kerr-Ann for being so kind and taking the time to answer my questions, I had so much fun reading your answers. Also her current novel "The Reluctant Sacrifice" is on sale for .99 cents and Beneath Scarlett Valley is currently free. To read my review for The Reluctant Sacrafice click here!

1) Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I was born in Kingston, Jamaica where I got my start writing plays for a local church. After moving to the United States, I worked as a Flight Attendant and then in Marketing before deciding to pursue writing as a career and not just a hobby. I now live in Michigan where I am working on The Reluctant Huntress, a companion story to my YA novel, The Reluctant Sacrifice. When not writing, I spend my days reading, stalking my fellow authors on Instagram, and redecorating. I squeeze in an episode of The Big Bang Theory and The Vampire Diaries whenever I can. I am also a voracious book collector and have recently had my Amazon 1-click privilege revoked because I am prone to sleep-shopping.

I love chatting with readers and fellow authors. Find me on Instagram (author.kerr), Twitter (@annk3rr), and Facebook.

2) When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book?

I began writing as a child. I started with poems and then plays. After moving to the U.S., I began experimenting with longer stories. I wrote Beneath Scarlett Valley in 2011. Upon completion, I shoved it under my bed and wrote The Reluctant Sacrifice. I then shoved it under my bed too and pulled out Beneath Scarlett Valley again. I published it in 2014.

3) Is there any author or book that influenced you in anyway either growing up or as an adult?

  1. J. K. Rowling. The woman is a genius. Her world building and attention to details are second to none.
  2. C.S. Lewis. His creativity is beyond anything we’re seeing today. He had just the perfect mixture of light and darkness without being heavy-handed.
  3. Nnedi Okorafor. Everything about her writing is fearless. I can’t get enough.
  4. Stephen King. He’s an expert on all things dark, creepy, and bloody.
  5. Ted Dekker. He gets it. He knows how to craft thought-provoking stories that stay in your head for years after reading them.

4) Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?

No. When I want something, I make it happen. We live in an age where publishing on your own is possible. Please notice, I didn’t say easy. Sure, uploading to Amazon is a no-brainer, but an author who wants to do more than see their name in print has to invest in their craft. I invested, heavily, while publishing The Reluctant Sacrifice. I hired writing coaches and editors. Then, I hired book designers, and reached out to beta readers and reviewers. Will I still consider a traditional publisher? Yes. I have a secret project that I intend to pitch. However, if it winds up at the bottom of a slush pile, I’ll send it off to beta-readers and see if they think the story is worth publishing.

5) How did you come up with this title?

I chose The Reluctant Sacrifice as I ironed out the details of the novel and became familiar with the lead character, Aubrey Shaw. After the first draft, I began to have doubts and so decided on the title, The Hunted. All my beta-readers hated the new title, and encouraged me to stick with my gut. So, I went back to The Reluctant Sacrifice. I am happy I did.

6) Do you ever experience writers block?

Unfortunately, yes. I hate not writing, but I’ve found that it’s my body’s way of telling me to take a break. A day or two away from my story usually gets rid of it.

7) Do you have any advice to give aspiring authors?

Be fearless. It is easy to play it safe by copying others. Resist the urge to do so. Find your own voice and ideas, then work your butt off to hone your style. Readers will thank you for it. Plus, it’s more fun than putting a spin on someone else’s story.

8) Is there anything you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Thank you. Every review and letter is appreciated and treasured.

Synopsis:

Not one of the sacrifices chosen over the long history had survived--until now.

On the tip of the Yucatan peninsula, the immortal Castillo family gathers in Tulum. Weary and haunted, they receive the names of fifty-two human sacrifices chosen once every fifty-two years for the Underworld, a tradition thought to have disappeared with the fall of the Aztec and Mayan empires.

Driving home one night, college freshman Zara Moss swerves to avoid hitting a ghastly figure in the road. Lucas Castillo witnesses the car crash, but when it comes time to supervise her abduction from the wreckage, he intervenes. Something is different about Zara: Lucas has been having dreams of her arrival for five hundred years.

As Lucas and Zara come together to put an end to the bloody sacrifices, they discover that the ancient tradition isn't so easily broken. The gods are angry, and they have until the Winter Solstice to drag Zara to the Underworld.

My Thoughts:

The author was kind enough to send me a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.

This novel blew me away, I can’t believe it's a debut novel it so well written and I loved every second of it. Lucas and his family have been chosen by higher gods to be the watchers that will make sure that the abductions of fifty-two sacrifices that are chosen every fifty-two years for the underworld god goes smoothly, but this year is different because Lucas has been waiting for this particular fifty-second sacrifice for five hundred years. So, when Zara is about to get abducted he decides to interfere and safe her. This interference makes the Gods angry and puts Lucas family and his life in danger, but the Castillo’s are ready to put an end to the bloody sacrifices and have finally found someone that can help them.

This book was amazing! Dela hit it out of the park with this one. I loved every second of this novel; it's hard to believe it's a debut novel the writing just flows so easily and sucks you in to the point you don't want to put it down. I really enjoyed the Aztec and Mayan history throughout the book and I'm completely obsessed with it now. If you have been following me for a while then you know that I love mythology and Gods so, the fact this book had gods in it made it five hundred times better I also loved learning and reading about them. The romance in this book was very well written it wasn't insta-love it's something that grows between Lucas and Zara as the book progresses. I fell in love with all the characters in this book even the villains! Lucas has been added to my ever-growing list of book boyfriends that prince had me swooning all over the place especially when he would speak Spanish; he might come across as a little over protective, but it comes from a good place. Zara was such a strong character I don't think I would have handled being a sacrifice as well as she did, I loved that she didn't take any crap from anyone and when she wanted be heard she made people listen. I'm not sure if this book is a standalone, but I'm really hoping for a sequel because I couldn't get enough of all the characters and the world Dela created and I'm hoping to read more about them. If you're looking for a something different and fresh to read this is definitely it, it has everything you would look for in a book action, romance, paranormal, gods, royals and diversity. So, what are you waiting for?! You must buy this book!

Slumber

Book Review

Slumber (The Slumber Duology, #1)

Title: Slumber (The Slumber Duology #1)
Author: Christy Sloat
Rating: ★★★★.5
Date Published: March 16, 2015
Publisher: Anchor Group Publishing
Page Count: 234
Genre: YA Fantasy
Meet The Author: Christy Sloat
Buy Me! Amazon, B&N,

Synopsis:

Not all princesses get their happily ever after...
They tell me I killed my boyfriend Phillip in cold blood. I stabbed him twenty one times. I’m only seventeen years old, and I am serving life in Spindle Ridge Asylum for the Criminally Insane.
I don’t remember killing him, so it’s really hard to believe I’m capable of murder. In fact I don’t remember anything before I came to Spindle Ridge, not even my boyfriend.
I can only grasp onto my realistic dreams while the madness of the asylum threatens to pull me under. I dream I’m a beautiful princess and there is an evil faerie named Maleficent who is bent on my destruction. The dreams are the closest thing I have to memories of my life, except they aren’t real.
I’m crazy. I’m not a princess.
They’re the mad illusions of an irrational teenage girl, right?
They’ve assigned me a new doctor, and she says I can trust her, and that she’ll help me see the truth of who I really am.
When she arrived she brought a new patient, Sawyer, who is everything Spindle Ridge isn’t: exciting, mysterious and beautiful. He promises he’s here to rescue me. Trusting either of them frightens me.
Could it be possible that my dreams are more than just the imaginings of a delusional girl? Could they be truth?

My Thoughts:

The author was kind enough to provide me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is not your typical Sleeping Beauty retelling, but it's just as great. Rory has been sent to Spindle Ridge Asylum where she has been told she killed her boyfriend Phillip, the thing is Rory can't recall killing Phillip or even having a boyfriend all she can remember is walking into the asylum; the only thing keeping her from going mad are the very realistic dreams she’s been having, where she is a princess and has been cursed by an evil fairy.  That is until the day a new patient by the name of Sawyer checks into the Asylum, his presence starts to bring back some very powerful memories.

I've read a couple of Sleeping Beauty retellings, but this is by far my favorite! It's so different and I love it! Christy really made this story her own and gave the classic a wonderful twist; this book is so beautifully written and just kept me turning the pages. I loved the character development Rory goes throughout the book, she is a very strong and smart character and now let’s take a moment to appreciate the perfection that is Sawyer, his personality and the things he does for Rory would make any girl fall for him instantly. The ending killed me I was not ready for it, I felt my heart stop, I had to put the book down and take a couple of breaths; I need the second book immediately! I need to know what happens next!

If you have not picked this book up yet, I highly recommend you do and especially with October around the corner this is the perfect creepy read and one of the best Sleeping Beauty retelling's I've read this year.
