Chapter 1

The room was stifling with the influx of bodies packed tight, and an anxious shuffling filled the windowless space as the Nocturna guards tried to suppress their growing claustrophobia. If they felt comfortable being contained within four walls, they would have chosen a different profession. Dev cracked his knuckles one at a time, a restless habit he’d acquired after being forced to appear at these biweekly gatherings. Even though he’d graduated above the ranks of all the soldiers here, his spotty attendance was not well received.

Alex’s rather verbose and overwrought reprimand of him being a role model to the rest of the cadets still rang in his ears. And it did the job to motivate him to show up so long as he never had to endure that speech again. At least the old man was effective in his irritation.

Letting out an impatient breath, Dev watched the stout general in the front of the room address the mass of soldiers. The blue-white lights above highlighted the gray in Alex’s cropped hair, and his burly chest puffed up at the end of his sentences. The information he shared was always the same, or a close variation—the Metus numbers were slowly rising, extra shifts were added to the schedules of every team, and Dev and Aveline were continuously assigned to patrol the northern part of the grasslands surrounding the city.

Glancing around the white space, it was easy to discern Dev wasn’t alone in his eagerness to start today’s rounds. The constant twirling of Arcuses, tapping of feet, and shifting of bodies were subtle indicators for Alex to get on with it already.

“And make sure to report back every sighting or anything else odd that occurs on your patrols,” the general said—his routine closing line, which was followed by its usual collection of relieved sighs.

“Thank Terra,” Aveline muttered beside Dev as she stood from leaning against the wall. “I actually think I manifested the ability to sleep during that.”

Dev gave his partner a wry glance. “At least that would be one positive thing that would’ve come from attending these things.”

“Yeah, well, still not worth it.” Aveline pulled her long, pale hair into a ponytail and readjusted the Arcus strap across her chest. “You ready?”

“Lead the way.” He inclined his head toward the door.

Pressing tight into the cluster of other guards all waiting to exit, Dev peered down as an arm brushed against his backside. With the graze being more of a grope, he was not surprised to find thick lips fashioned into a sly smirk pointed up at him.

“Oh, sorry,” the girl said in a honey-laced voice. “Close quarters.” She gestured to the congested group as a way of an explanation.

“Ah yes, I forgot you have issues keeping your hands to yourself, Candice. Especially while in crowds.”

“You didn’t seem to think it was an issue the other night.” Her gaze remained bold.

“And with you”—Dev leaned in—“I never will.”

A snort came from in front of them, but he ignored it, watching as a blossom of pink spread across Candice’s ebony skin. He smiled crookedly. “Safe rounds,” he murmured and, with her features still in a fluster, slipped through the door.

 “You’re horrible,” Aveline said once they’d traveled down the hall.

“Why?”

“Candice has no idea what she’s getting into.”

“On the contrary, I think she has a very clear idea. In fact, she usually comes up with all of them. And let me tell you”—he arced a brow—“they can be pretty creatively flex—”

“Ugh, gag me with Metus droppings, why don’t you?” Aveline shoved Dev’s shoulder. “That’s not what I meant. You shouldn’t play with her like that. And yes, I realize I just set you up for another disgusting innuendo, so just don’t.”

A half smile flirted across his lips. “As long as you’re aware.”

“Dev,” she chastened.

“Ave, she knows I don’t do serious. They all know.”

“Yeah, well, they have a funny way of forgetting, and then I have to hear about it.”

“Oh, is that what this is about?” Dev turned to her, realization dawning on his face. “You don’t have to be so passive aggressive. If you want me to buy you earplugs, you just have to ask.”

She attempted to throw a punch to his arm again, but he sidestepped, his amused chuckle echoing down the hall.

“I give up.” She stalked forward. “I’m no longer covering for you when they come to me with death threats, asking where you are.”

“I like to think of those more as demands of passion.” He caught up with her in two long strides.

“I pity the next girl you meet,” Aveline said with a shake of her head and pushed through the doors to the outside. “I really do.”

Even though Dev laughed, deep down he couldn’t help but agree. The place his heart should’ve been had been hollowed out for decades. And though they’d all tried, desperately so, no one had yet been the one to refill it.

And Dev wasn’t sure if he ever wanted to encounter anybody who could.

Dreamcatcher Excerpt 1

Twisting a path through the remains of the fallen Metus, Dev tried not to think further about his own recent loss of soldiers, knowing they would be mourned silently, the Terra way. Instead he searched for something that might explain why the creatures were able to move so close to Terra’s borders undetected. The thought sent a chill down his spine. What if they had shown up like that near him and Molly? He was a good fighter, but he wasn’t that good. Rubbing the worn area on his Arcus strap, he took a moment to look up into the night’s sky, watching the endless stream of sleeping minds zipping by. How many were infected with nightmares tonight? How many were adding to their enemy’s numbers?

His main solace rested in the fact that Molly was awake now, her mind untouchable. But they wouldn’t always get so lucky. And he wondered if that was Terra’s plan. Could the energy he knew was churning inside her be used to fight? Defend?

Turning toward the city, Dev caught the approach of the medic vehicles, their sleek chrome bodies designed to camouflage their surroundings. As they hovered to settle beside a few injured Nocturna, their soft hums grew quieter. Sweeping the perimeter, Dev looked for any lingering orange forms in the distance, but all remained dark, undisturbed. Still, his muscles stayed alert, for there was now a truth not even Rae or Aveline could deny—things were changing. The Metus hadn’t attacked in packs for decades, a behavior that meant their numbers were growing rapidly.

Shoving a hand into his front pocket, Dev sought out the tiny round object that rested within and began to trace the spiral design over and over with his thumb as his thoughts similarly looped with disquiet. For this change only meant one thing for his land.

• What’s your book about?  

The Stolen Thief continues a sub-plot from the prior book, The Prison Planet of the Mah-Lahkt. Glaive the thief has gone undercover for a special mission for the King which falls apart and he seemingly disappears. Qualtan insists on finding him, but the King, who has some bias against the thief because of his half-orcne heritage (orcnes being these bestial creatures they usually war against), won’t allow it, so the knight decides to go against his wishes and find him anyway.  In the process, he uncovers the truth about the legend of the Dokahlfar and the Vartahlfar, evil elves and their dwarfish companions that controlled an unknown technological magic, and ends up having to forge a truce with a band of servants from Those That Stand in Shadow (evil creatures that are recurring villains in the series), to attempt escape from the clutches of the Dokahlfar, while not trying to kill each other in the process.

There’s adventure, excitement, and further developments in Qualtan’s growing schism with the King, especially from the way his close friend Glaive has been treated because of his mixed orcne race. In addition, there is the return of a knight that fled from a battle back in Book Two. In each book since then, I’ve been showing snippets on what has been happening to this character. His fate, along with that of a mystery character revealed in the last few pages of The Stolen Thief (a mystery character, by the by, that was referenced way back in Book One that probably no one will ever catch, heh heh), will lead to what happens to Qualtan in Book Five of Forging of a Knight – Knighthood’s End.

• Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead characters from your book?

That is a toughie! No one specific comes to mind, but someone along the lines of a David Wenham (who played Faramir in the Lord of the Rings movies) would have the right “look” and presence for Qualtan.

Glaive the half-orcne thief would be even tougher. Being this sarcastic, distrustful, glass half-empty kind of a character, and yet still loyal to Qualtan and their friendship, would require the need for a combination of the snarkiness and deadpan comedy of a David John Battley (sadly deceased), similar to his role as Ergo the Magnificent from the movie Krull, and Roddy McDowall ala his role as Cornelius in the old Planet of the Apes movies (another great actor that has long since passed). Maybe your readers can help me out on that one, lol… 

• What are you working on at the minute?

The rough write-through for Book Five of the Forging of a Knight series, Knighthood’s End! The so-called curse Qualtan has been dealing with since the start seems to finally come through at last. Will he betray his knighthood, become a hunted fugitive, and lose everything he has, all for the sake of a love forbidden? The title might just give it away…

• What was the hardest part of writing this book?  

When you build up an ongoing series, you want to ensure that (a) the characters grow and the storyline progresses, built up by sub-plots and the actions of one story to another, but at the same time you want to make sure that (b) the next book in the series can still stand alone and be accessible to a new reader without getting bogged down with too many bits from the books that went before it.  Having all these references to strange names and stranger places from prior tales can only confuse a new reader and make them lose interest.

• Do you write every single day? 

I try to – sometimes I can be really productive and get a handful of pages in, other times maybe just a thought or paragraph to expand on later. If I hit a wall, I’ll take a few days off to recharge.

• Do you have any advice for other writers?

Write what you have a passion for, and not just to follow a theme or fad – the honesty of your writing will definitely shine through. Also, be patient with your ideas, and take the time to hear what your characters have to say. For some variety, I switched a supporting male knight in Book Two of the series into a female knight, not thinking much beyond that, but she literally took a life of her own, taking the storyline into a whole different area I hadn’t thought of and becoming a bigger part of the overall saga, improving it as well.

• Is there any person/s that has inspired you to write Forging of a Knight, The Stolen Thief?

Notwithstanding the aforementioned cartoon, for the entire series, I have given thanks to quite a few people – of course, my wife for giving me the gumption to write the stories now, not later, my mother and father who had always supported and encouraged my voracious reading habits, but especially my 7^th grade teacher. She introduced her class to the creative wonder of role-playing games as a means to teach leadership and teamwork, and was also a big fan of fantasy herself. After that, I was really blown away by the concept and never looked back.

• Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

There is usually a subtle hint of acceptance and redemption in my stories, where the worst is assumed from certain individuals or groups until they are given a chance – such as Glaive in the first book, a certain Giant in the second, and of course, the wild and crazy band of orcnes in the fourth – another life lesson I wanted to touch upon, and one that really hits hard when you get to book five…

• What books have most influenced your life most?

Tolkien, of course, with regards to the introduction it gave me to fantasy. Although I write fantasy, I have always loved the intellectual battles of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, which helped me to think of questioning things in a logical manner and not just be taken in by the passion of an argument vs. the facts behind it, and the atmospheric detail of an H.P. Lovecraft where there was such a blend of invented mythology and real life locales the reader could easily become confused on what was real and what was not if they didn’t dig deep enough – another life lesson to be wary of!

• What genre do you consider your book(s)? 

Fantasy, epic fantasy. Action and adventure could be included with that, I would guess.

My Thoughts:

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book and I REALLY want to know what happens after that ending, but I did have some minor problems with it, I was able to get past them and enjoy the book as a whole, but I will still discuss them on here. Devyn and her six friends have a normal life until Devyn's boss with the help of his seven guests tells them that they're destined to save a whole other realm. Devyn and her friends are thought combat and are given new powers to fight a long time battle of good and evil.

Like I said above I really enjoyed this book and loved all the magical aspects about it there were so many mythical creatures and I loved it. Devyn was such a kick ass character and took crap from no one even if that person was her superior. I also really loved the friendship of all the characters in this book they will stand up to anyone and do anything for each-other. One character that really stood out to me was Nocte and I really wished he would have made more appearances in the book, I loved the way the author wrote him and how mysterious he was; what I can say I have a thing for bad boys who want to do the right thing. The only thing that I really had a problem was the overwhelming amount of information and characters that are introduced in the first few chapters in the book; I had such a hard time remembering who was who and what powers they had, but as the book progressed it got better. Also K.C. Hopes world building is very well done the places she describes in the other realm are so beautiful. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to see where the story goes! Also I need some more Nocte in my life!
